God's presence is a free gift but many Christians have not learned how to receive it, as they believe mistakenly that it must be earned.
Paul says in Romans 8:38-39:
"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Paul's experience of God's love and presence had been attacked by trials and tribulations and even principalities and powers, but his conclusion was that there is nothing that can separate him from God's presence of love, as long as he was able to receive it as free gift.
